Labels that have yellowed around the side. Thanks to the chemical composition of a label, it is possible for them to turn yellow with time. Paper labels are made from small cellulose fibers,a plant based material which are mixed into a pulp using water. When the mixture dries, the molecules bond to each other because the fibers dissolve partly. Chlorine bleach is used in the production of paper labels. Over time, this turns into hydrochloric acid. Labels also contain other acid-producing compounds, making labels highly acidic. The high acid content means the chemical bonds between cellulose molecules eventually break. Meaning the labels become brittle and can turn yellow Labels that no longer adhere to the liner and fall off. This can be caused by a structural or adhesive failure on the back of the label. It is possible for cohesion to fail and this can happen when a label has been applied to a surface. When removed, some of the adhesive transfers to the surface whilst some remains on the back of the label. Failure can occur when the adhesive used is not appropriate for the application. And specifically, surface preparation, application and curing. Also, the environment may be inappropriate for the label Labels where the adhesive has dried out on the back and don’t effectively stick to a surface Labels that have started to curl up on the roll. This happens when the moisture levels change. Or when moisture is lost at a greater or slower rate than its silicone layer. Label curling becomes a particular issue when extremities in temperature occur. As such, labels should be stored in an environment of the correct temperature and humidity. If you want to prevent labels curling, make sure to buy a strong brand along with a strong, moisture resistant backing

  2. S U M M A R Y There are a number of ways to tell whether your labels are past their best. Yellowing around sides caused by breakdown of cellulose molecules by acid content Lack of adherence to liner, indicating the adhesive has failed or dried out Labels curling up, caused by moisture and temperature changes In this post, we have outlined a number of ways this can be prevented. Such as buying a reputable brand, correct storage and using the correct label for the correct application. Where can I buy high quality labels? ASL Labels stock a large range of the highest quality labels which can be ordered through our site. We are proud to offer the highest levels of service.
