Look at the world we live in • It has become a world of comparison • Almost every commercial tells you that you need more • We are a “consumer” nation • Our President proclaims that credit is the life blood of the American Economy • Where there is envy and strife, there is confusion and every evil work (James 3:16)

  4. On the other side - Boasting • King Hezekiah – 2 Kings 20:13-18 • Hezekiah was king over Judah, Israel had fallen captive to Assyria • Assyria and Judah battled back and forth constantly • Hezekiah wants to impress the Babylonians • He boasts of all his riches Boasting

  5. Another Boaster • King Herod – Acts 12:20-24 • Tyre and Sidon were at odds with King Herod • They strategically became friends with his personal aide (kissed up) • King Herod received their praises and allowed them to refer to him as a god • He was eaten by worms and died Boasting

  6. Contentment is right in the middle Boasting Envy Content

  7. Contentment frees you! • 1976 – total number of items in the average grocery store – 9,000. In 1994 – over 30,000 • Shearson Lehman Brothers poll – the American Dream would cost roughly twice their current salary • The Golcanda Diamond Mine and Ali Hafed’s orchard • Story of the content fisherman

  8. Let’s look at a great example • 2 Cor 6:3-10 • And what is our response? • But Lord, I don’t like my job • But Lord, my children aren’t following you • But Lord, I’d tithe if I had a little more money • But Lord, you don’t understand my circumstance

  9. He who the Son sets free is free indeed! • You have the ability to choose being content • You are able to find happiness right where you are at…..right now! • Contentment is a choice • Phil 4:11Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ[b] who strengthens me.
