  1. Putting the old man to death Colossians 3:1 - 11

  2. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Be what you truly are (1 -4) • If you are a Christian then you are now a citizen of heaven • Be heavenly minded, take control of your thought life • Keep your eyes fixed on heaven, not distracted by the world • Seek Christ • Seek to do what pleases Christ • Seek after our living, reigning King

  3. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Be what you truly are (1 -4) • You have died with Christ (3) • Your true, spiritual life is in Christ • Your spiritual life is secure from harm • “For to me, to live is Christ , and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21) • When He returns you will be with Him in that glorious appearing (1 John 3:2)

  4. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Kill or be killed (5 - 11) • We have a deadly enemy who will show us no mercy – our sinful flesh • Sin no longer reigns over us but until our flesh is renewed there is remaining sin • Because we now belong to Christ we need to stamp on those things in our lives which may cause us to sin – these things will be different for each of us

  5. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH What needs to be killed (5) • Paul’s list is not comprehensive. He begins with external actions and moves to our thoughts • Sexual immorality/fornication (porneia) • Uncleanness (akatharsia) • Passion and evil desires (contrast with Philippians 4:8) • Covetousness (idolatry) – be contented with who you are and what God has provided for you

  6. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Why they need to be killed (6 - 7) • These thing will be judged by God – a believer will not lose their salvation but who would want to be classified with those who sin? • They belong to our old life, the old man • Before salvation these things were part and parcel of our lives – they should play no part in the life that God has now granted us as His beloved children

  7. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Drastic action is needed (8 - 9) • A second list of things that need to be removed from the lives of believers: • Anger/wrath • Malice • Blasphemy • Filthy language • Lying to one another

  8. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH Put off the old man (10 -11) • Having dealt with the things from our old nature that need to be removed Paul encourages the Colossians to put on the new man • Renewed in thinking • Renewed in relationships • Jesus Christ is all that matters – the things that divide people are less important than the great reality that unites them

  9. PUTTING THE OLD MAN TO DEATH LESSONS FOR TODAY • Remember we are in a battle • God expects His children to live in a way that pleases Him • Deal ruthlessly and mercilessly with your enemy • God has equipped us through His Spirit and His Word to overcome temptation and sin • We are to live lives as citizens of heaven and not creatures of the world
