  2. Streamlining Philosophy (1935 – 1955) • The streamline modern design emerged towards the end of the Art-Dec period. • The Idea was taken from futuristic developments in aerospace and high speed transportation. • New materials and mass manufacturing pushing the earth into the future was developed allowing streamlined products to be allowed in cost effective production.

  3. Style • Streaming defines as ‘the shaping of an object to reduce the amount of drag or resistance when in motion’ i.e. A curve allows air to flow smoothly and evenly around the product. • Products such as this fridge and pencil sharpener do not require streamlining but it was ideal for the upcoming ‘space age’ and ‘googie style’. This is the renowned tear drop shape.

  4. Loewy Fact file • Born in France (5 November 1893) he was recognised as a talented designer for his Ayrel model aircraft. However after fighting in world war I he moved to the United States of America. He is most famous for the following:

  5. Early Year • Loewy lived in New York and worked as a window designer for Macys, Wannamaker's and Saks as well as working as a fashion illustrator for Vogue and Harpers Bazaar.

  6. Pennsylvania Road • 1937- Loewy began designing passenger locomotives. Here he designed the ultra streamline shroud for K4s Pacific to haul the newly redesigned 1938 Broadway limited. This was followed by the S1 locomotive and T1 Class. Later the predesigned Baldwin's was redesigned with the renowned shark nose seen in the T1. • Welding instead of riveting

  7. S1 Locomotive T1 Class

  8. Studebaker • In the late 1930’s Loewy designs began to appear for Studebaker such as the replacement of the wheel logo. • After world war II Studebaker launched the first post was automobile which included features such as flush front fenders and clean rearward lines. They also create the starlight body which featured a rear window wrapping 180 degrees around the rear seat. • Iconic bullet nose

  9. Avanti • The most famous of his designs and an instant classic. Ironically Loewy was only given 40 days to produce a finished design and scaled model.
