  2. University Modernisation Fund – UMF HEFCE – aim to share services in the sector for efficiency…many feasibility studies that covered a wide range of services Fund available £20m, £12.5m for the Shared Services and the CloudProgrammemanaged by JISC, and VIDaaS & DataFlow are part of this.

  3. Overview 1 • Two main elements: • 1) to establish a national shared IT infrastructure in the form of a higher education cloud (£10m) • 2) to develop cloud computing and shared services in central administration functions to support learning, teaching, and research (£2.5m) • UMF Shared Services and the Cloud programme is managed by JISC and runs from 1 February 2011 until 31 March 2012 • www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/umf.aspx

Overview 2 • Cloud Brokerage Service • Aim: To establish a national brokerage service to support, drive and coordinate data centre services provision for the sector is required to enable services development, quality improvement and simultaneous cost savings, via JANET (UK). • Data and Cloud Services Framework; • Data centre Colocation Service Framework; • High Performance Computing Dynamic Purchasing Service (DPS); • Storage DPS. - Pilot Cloud infrastructure via Eduserv - now available and rolling out a service offer to the sector, as well as being available via the JANET brokerage.

Overview 3 • Research Data Management • Aim: To further roll out the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) to support tools, training and support of Data Management within research groups and institutions and to deploy research data management tools as Software as a Service in the proposed Community Cloud. • DCC – Northampton, Bath, UEA, East London, QMUL, St Andrews, Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford Brookes, Salford, LSE, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Warwick, Hull • Data Management Plans (DMPOnline), policies – building on JISC’s DCC offer but scaling it up and the enhancing capacity in the sector

Overview 4 • ViDaaS - Virtual Infrastructure for Database as a Service- (University of Oxford) –an easy to use cloud hosted database management tool • DataFlow (University of Oxford) – an integrated set of tools to manage data within Life Sciences and other similar research projects to make it easier to submit data for longer-term storage in an appropriate standards compliant data repository • Smart Research Framework (University of Southampton) – an electronic lab data management and collaboration environment for a range of scientific disciplines • BRISSkit -Biomedical Research Infrastructure Software Service kit- (University of Leicester) – supporting joint NHS and university research teams working with tissue samples and anonymised patient data • Curation & re-use and citation of research data. • Transferability, re-use, of the tools …products that are sustained.

  7. Other services in the administration strand • Research Management Administration Service (led by University of Exeter)- pre to post award, shared research management modules • Knowledge Base +, electronic resource management (managed by JISC Collections & a partnership between JISC & SCONUL) • Digital Academic Record Exchange (led by Liverpool John Moores University) – secure on-line delivery of degree certificates, transcripts, Higher Education Achievement Reports and other student data • SPSS now NEXUS – systems and services procurement support function &interconnection of administration systems - a cloud-hosted enterprise service bus & expertise.
