  1. Answering Questions This is how we do it!

  2. Do Now – Please answer the following questions on a piece of paper. • 1) What is your favorite color? • 2) Why is SpongeBob so popular? • 3) How many times do you brush your teeth each day? Did you answer with complete sentences?

  3. If you didn’t answer with complete sentences, your answer may not match the question. • 1) What color is your hair? • 2) What makes Dr. Holbrook a good principal? • 3) How many sit ups can you do in a minute?

  4. Why should we write answers with complete sentences? • We all need to communicate effectively. We speak and write with complete sentences so you should practice the skill. • You can practice writing skills in all subjects. • You can reinforce the proper use of English.

  5. Why should students be required to write answers with complete sentences? • Writing complete sentences helps you organize thoughts and think logically. • Answers will be easy to read and easy to understand. • Teachers can be sure that you understand the question. • Answering with complete sentences is good practice for standardized testing and can raise test scores.

  7. How can you remember to answer with complete sentences? C. D. E. M. S. C.Circle the important words in the question. D.Decide on the answer. Locate the answer in the text. E.Echo the question. Restate the question as you start your answer using the circled words.

  8. C. D. E. M.S. M.Mechanics matter. Start with a capital letter and end with a period. Sentences have a subject and a verb. S.Support your answer with proof from the text or reasons, facts, or evidence.

  10. Other General Tips • “Why” questions require a “because” but NEVER as the first word. • Don’t start with a pronoun. Use the name. • Students should not use a pronoun without first using the antecedent. This means don’t answer, “He was the first President of the United States.” The reader of the answer doesn’t know who “He” is.

  11. General Tips • Write the answer as if the reader doesn't know anything about the subject to make sure your answer is thorough and complete. • Start your answer by re-stating the question in your answer with an echo.
