  20. CLIL in Smart English • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) or content teaching • Topics that interest students (genetics, street art, moods, animation, the music industry, etc.)

  21. Challenges with CLIL • For teachers, having enough background knowledge in a subject area • For lower level classes, selecting topics that aren’t too vocabulary intensive • For students, avoiding frustration if they are not able to express their knowledge of the subject

  22. How do we meet the CLIL challenge? • Choose topics that we as teachers feel moderately comfortable with • Encourage students to select topics that are of genuine interest to them • Find and use a variety of materials (print, online, realia) to support the topics
