  1. Transport in West London Presentation by Suresh Kamath, Chairman of the West London Strategic Transport Group

  2. Less dependent Central London commuting • 62% employees resident in West London • Dispersed pattern of employment locations • Greater car ownership & use • Sustainable societies – live & work in sub-region

  3. 10 Point Plan for Transport • Origins: WELL Report (1998) • Vision Workshops (2005/06) • WL Transport Conference (Jan 2007) • Recognise engagement from TfL

  4. Main themes of the 10 Point Plan Congestion delays, unreliability, pollution, disturbance, accidents, quality of life Development Pressure widespread, significant, sub-regional impacts Orbital Movement limits access to jobs, healthcare, etc.

  5. Five (inter-related) action points • Zone between A40 / M4 • The Fastbus ‘dilemma’ • Personalised Travel Planning • The development planning agenda • Orbital transport

  6. 1. Action on zone between A40/M4 Utilise the modelling undertaken for tram – area between M4 and A40 Consider all options Start immediately and with short timescale Clarify asap programme of transport improvements - to assist private and public investment decisions

  7. 2. The Fastbus ‘Dilemma’ • Proposal developed by LB Brent and Park Royal Partnership • Orbital route – connecting stations on radial routes • Serving other route objectives • High quality, limited stop

  8. 2. The Fastbus ‘Dilemma’ Does not fit well with TfL structures: Not regarded as a major project Not really a bus planning project No “champion” within TfL for BRT projects How can we take this forward? Innovation fund for new ideas?

  9. 3. Personalised Travel Planning • West London has been in the forefront of transport innovation: accessibility analysis, travel planning, “green routes”, etc. • Enthusiastic to be next area for PTP: personalised travel plans (Hounslow)

  10. 4. Development Planning Agenda Significant and widespread planning applications for developments across the sub-region General desire to see investment, employment, re-generation, environmental improvements Local effects mitigation (S106, travel plans) Cumulative and sub-regional impacts?

  11. TfL 2025 - “There are key transport capacity enablers that must be in place to ensure these developments can proceed. Each location will need both effective mass transit linkages and local transport improvements to ensure their viability and sustainable development”

  12. 5. Orbital movement Shared agenda (SWELTRAC, NLSA, etc) No demand, no provision No provision, therefore no demand Alternative accessibility based analysis Commissioner’s Policy Unit work on this Propose a trial application in West London

  13. The Longer Term Need a longer term infrastructure plan, specified in more detail for West London We want to see some specific schemes tested including Airtrack and the West London Orbital We want investors to have confidence in the future planning of West London We want MTS2 to recognise West London issues
