  2. MATERIALS • Book-…..If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution • Computer with internet access • Your journal • Pencil or pen

INTRODUCTION • Do you ever wonder what it would have been like if you had lived at the time of The American Revolution? • Would your family have been on the side of the Patriots or on the side of the Loyalists? • What would your life have been like once your family decided to be a Loyalist or a Patriot? • You will find the answers to these questions and more by reading the book….IF YOU LIVED AT THE TIME OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

BEFORE READING • On the first half of your graphic organizer, predict the following-(make at least 1 • prediction for each part of the question-10 in all) • If your family were Loyalists, how would your life have changed after the • Declaration (of Independence)? What if your family were Patriots? • How could you tell who were Loyalists? Patriots? • If your family were Loyalists how did you support the war? If your family were • Patriots? • 4) If your family were Loyalists how would they get food and clothing? What if • they were Patriots? • What would school be like if your family were Loyalists? Patriots? • Link to the Graphic Organizer. Save in your file. When complete print it out.

  5. DURING READING Fill in the second half of the graphic organizer while I read aloud- (at least 2 answers for each part-20 in all) • What happened to Loyalist families after the Declaration? Patriot families? • How could you tell if someone was a Loyalist? Patriot? • How did Loyalist families get food and clothing? Patriot families? • Would you have gone to school if your family were Loyalists? Patriots? • How would your family have supported the war if they were Loyalists? Patriots?

  6. AFTER READING • In your journal, write whether you would want your family to side with the Loyalists or with the Patriots. Give at least 3 reasons from the text to support your opinion. • Discuss with the person sitting next to you which side each of you is on and why.

  7. BEYOND READING Click on the name of one of the men or women who were well known at the time for either being a Loyalist or a Patriot. Choose one from the list whose side you would have wanted to be on. Take notes in your journal and be prepared to become this person when you present to the class.
