  2. Lesson 7: Objectives • Define the term “pests”. • Know the steps unit personnel can take to control pests. • Implement pest management in accordance with KSARNG policy.

  3. Defining Pests • A pest is any organism that can: • Adversely affect people • Damage property or natural resources • Otherwise threaten the ability of the KSARNG to accomplish its mission

  4. Pests Include . . . • Insects • Rodents • Birds • Weeds • Fungi • Microorganisms

  5. Insecticides Herbicides Fungicides Rodenticides Bactericides Algaecides Avicides Pesticides • Substances used to destroy, repel, or otherwise prevent damage by pests • Pesticides include:

  6. Pesticides can.. • Accumulate in the air, soil, surface water, and groundwater • Affect untargeted plants and animals You must use pesticides properly to prevent or minimize the risk of environmental exposure!

  7. Self-help Pest Control Methods • Contact DOFE-E or see the KSARNG Integrated Pest Management Plan for a specific list of allowed self-help pest control methods • KSARNG personnel can use allowed self-help methods without prior approval

  8. Self-help Pest Control Products • Mechanical traps and glue boards for insects and rodents • Bait for ants or cockroaches • Aerosol insecticides • Fly swatters • Repellents • Insecticide dusts for cockroach control

  9. Common Chemical Pesticides • Liquid herbicides (Round-Up, Durisban) • Rat poison (Warfarin) • Wasp spray (Raid, Black Flag) • Mothballs • Gopher bait (Gopher-Getter)

Pesticide Applications • All pesticide applications (other than self-help) made on KSARNG properties must be approved by DOFE-E • Includes local contractors • Must be in accordance with the Integrated Pest Management Plan • Any facility or activity that requires pest control should first contact the Pest Management Coordinator (PMC) at DOFE-E

KSARNG Pesticide Reports and Records • ECOs must maintain records of all pest management operations performed by maintenance personnel, contractors, and self-help • Daily pesticide application and surveillance records are maintained using DD Form 1532-1, Pest Management Maintenance Record • Used to provide a permanent historical record of pest management operations

  14. Pesticide Labels • Must specify ingredients, warnings, and registrations • Use the labels and MSDSs to get information for safe storage, use, and disposal

  15. PPE • Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements specified on the label or MSDS • Unless otherwise specified, minimum PPE for pesticide application is: • Chemical resistant gloves, aprons, and boots • Full-face shield • Splash goggles • Respirators approved for use with the pesticide spilled • Work uniform or coveralls

  16. Guidelines for Storage, Use, and Disposal • Store all pesticides according to the instructions on the label • Separate pesticides from other materials, such as food supplies, medical supplies, and flammable or caustic materials • Dispose of pesticides properly
