#### Presentation Transcript

**1. **Hop Into Integers! Adding Positive and Negative Integers
Presented by:
Carol, Gracemarie, Kristen, Lucyann

**2. **Let’s Review! What is an integer?
An integer is a whole number or the opposite of a whole number.
What are some examples of positive integers?
1, 2, 3, 4 ,5, …
What are some examples of negative integers?
-1, -2, -3, -4, -5…
Remember that zero is also an integer because it is the only number that equals its own opposite.

**3. **Let’s Review Absolute Value Absolute Value
We will use what we have learned about absolute value when adding a positive and a negative integer.

**4. **Adding Integers with a Number Line

**6. **Let’s Play a Game! We are going to try another way to add positive and negative integers by using color chips. Let’s give it a try!
Color Chips - Addition - NLVM

**7. **What have we learned about adding integers? When you add two positive integers, your answer is a positive number.
Example: 5 + 2= 7
When you add two negative integers, your answer is a negative number.
Example: -5 + (-2)= -7
When you add a positive and a negative integer, the answer takes the sign of the number with the highest absolute value.
Example: -5 + 2= -3

**8. **Practice Time! 3+ (-5)= -3 + 8=
-4 + 7= -2 + (-2)=
-7 + 7= -7 + (-3)=
-4 + 9= -15 + 4=
4 + 9= 20 + (-22)=
5 + (-3)= -32 + 7=

**9. **Keep on Hopping into Integers!
