1. Hop Into Integers! Adding Positive and Negative Integers Presented by: Carol, Gracemarie, Kristen, Lucyann

2. Let’s Review! What is an integer? An integer is a whole number or the opposite of a whole number. What are some examples of positive integers? 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5, … What are some examples of negative integers? -1, -2, -3, -4, -5… Remember that zero is also an integer because it is the only number that equals its own opposite.

3. Let’s Review Absolute Value Absolute Value We will use what we have learned about absolute value when adding a positive and a negative integer.

4. Adding Integers with a Number Line

6. Let’s Play a Game! We are going to try another way to add positive and negative integers by using color chips. Let’s give it a try! Color Chips - Addition - NLVM

7. What have we learned about adding integers? When you add two positive integers, your answer is a positive number. Example: 5 + 2= 7 When you add two negative integers, your answer is a negative number. Example: -5 + (-2)= -7 When you add a positive and a negative integer, the answer takes the sign of the number with the highest absolute value. Example: -5 + 2= -3

8. Practice Time! 3+ (-5)= -3 + 8= -4 + 7= -2 + (-2)= -7 + 7= -7 + (-3)= -4 + 9= -15 + 4= 4 + 9= 20 + (-22)= 5 + (-3)= -32 + 7=

9. Keep on Hopping into Integers!
