  2. Professional Ethics case 5.8(Buchanan and Henderson, 2009, p.104-105) • Karen, a youth service librarian noticed a young girl has stopped socializing with friends. She was losing weight and Karen noticed the girl was visiting pro-anorexia sites on the internet. • Does the librarian have a moral obligation to tell the parents or should she uphold the girls right of privacy?

  3. Facts • Definite changes in young girl: • No longer socializing with friends • Losing weight and pale • Visiting pro-anorexia websites • Libraries filters are not blocking these harmful sites. Is it the librarians responsibility to stop their use by telling parents?

Moral Dilemma • Karen must follow ALA code of ethics regarding confidentiality. • Does this code of ethics apply to minors? • Karen feels morally responsible for protecting the child • As an information professional, what is Karen’s responsibility?   5. Respect for Privacy and Intellectual Freedom Support • “We protect each library user’s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.” (American Library Association, 2008b)

  6. Respect for Privacy and Intellectual Freedom Support • “Librarians and governing bodies should not resort to age restrictions on access to library resources in an effort to avoid actual or anticipated objections from parents or anyone else.” (American Library Association, 2008a)

  7. Support for Nonmaleficence - Keeping Kids Safe • “LIS professionals recognize that they have social responsibilities to their communities as well as responsibilities to help the library survive and perform their professional functions” (Rubin, 2010, p.418)

  8. Support for Nonmaleficence - Keeping Kids Safe • “Ethical stresses arise from the interactions and imperatives of each of these elements, which are sometimes not easily or consistently balanced. Hence, there might be a conflict between the self as an individual and the self as an employee or a member of an organization.” (Rubin, 2010, p416)

  9. Evaluation • Karen’s role as an information professional should be her top priority. • Karen may send out a newsletter addressing parent’s involvement in their child’s library activities.
