  1. What is Vaginismus? Symptoms, Causes, Treatments, and More

  2. Vaginismus is a condition involving a muscle spasm in the pelvic floor muscles. It can make it painful, difficult, or impossible to have sexual intercourse, to undergo a gynecological exam, and to insert a tampon.

  3. What are the different types of vaginismus? • There are two main types of vaginismus. • Primary: This is when a woman has had pain every time something entered her vagina, including a penis (called penetrative sex), or when she’s never been able to insert anything into her vagina. It’s also called lifelong vaginismus. • Secondary: This is when a woman has had sex without pain before, but then it becomes difficult or impossible. It’s also called acquired vaginismus.

  4. What are the symptoms of vaginismus? • Painful sex (dyspareunia) is often the first sign of vaginismus. The pain happens only with penetration. It usually goes away after withdrawal, but not always. • Symptoms of vaginismus include: • Not being able to have penetrative sex or insert a tampon at all • Fear of pain or sex • Loss of sexual desire

  5. How are vaginismus diagnosed? Vaginal dilatation is required. Your doctor will decide your treatment plan.
