Fuel Poverty and Affordable Warmth 3 million households in the UK live in cold, damp homes that they cannot afford to heat The UK Fuel Poverty Strategy (2001) aims to eliminate Fuel Poverty for all households by 2016 40,000 excess winter deaths in the UK every Year Living in cold, damp conditions contributes to illness such as respiratory infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, influenza), premature heart disease, strokes, asthma and falls

    6. Accidents in the home The cost to society of home accidents in the UK is estimated as £25 billion a year. Public Health Target – reduce death rates from accidents in the home by at least one fifth and reduce the rate of serious injury from accidents by one tenth by 2010 Priority attention – children, young adults and older people

Homelessness Homelessness has major affects on health – chronic chest or breathing problems, skin complaints, high attempts of suicide, higher rates of accidents, drink or drug addiction and an overall lower life expectancy. Homeless people have greater difficulty in accessing health services The mental health of homeless children is very poor

Action More joint; LA/HA/PCT/Private, voluntary and community sector, working -LSP and LAA offer exciting opportunities * for local communities to set agendas for their area * to pool resources Disseminate learning and good practice Increased supply of affordable homes should: - reduce homelessness - reduce overcrowding - offer an alternative to non-decent housing High Quality, in thriving mixed areas
