WisDOT Hazardous Materials Program • Implemented in 1986 • Created to: • Respond to construction emergencies within 24 hrs • Responsibly manage and dispose contaminated materials • Manages 15 – 20 “Hazmat Construction Emergencies” per year • SWR typically has 3 – 5 per year • More common in highly urbanized areas • Cost varies depending on circumstances

Haz Mat Takeaways When encountering an UST or suspected contaminated material, the following must occur: • Stop work immediately • Notify construction engineer • Notify appropriate Regional Environmental Coordinator (REC) • REC will coordinate with WisDOT Hazmat Program ***Make sure to check Special Provision for notification times for coordinated remediation.

  8. Cultural Resource (considerations) • Burial site coordination – Permit required • Catalogued (60-120 days) • Un-catalogued (30-45 days) • Burial site mitigation: • On-site Monitoring • Tribal Expert &/or Archaeologist • Fencing/etc.
