Writing Your First Proposal • Begin early - three to six months is not too early. • Be innovative—if your idea isn’t brand new, find an angle that is. • Do your homework, so that you know where your project fits and you can find your own niche. • Call a program officer. Summarize your project and get feedback on it.

Writing Your First Proposal • Contact ORSP as early as possible to start working on your budget and deal with things like Human Subjects. • Follow guidelines to the letter. • Write clearly, succinctly, and correctly. Graphics help. • Provide enough detail so that your reader knows what you are talking about.

  11. Writing Your First Proposal • Give yourself time for someone to read and critique your proposal. Revise on the basis of that input. • Do not rush the submission project. Electronic submission may make things slower, not faster. • If you don’t get funded, make sure you get your reviews and use that input in developing your next proposal.
