Division newsRule Making Activities • 12VAC5-481 X-Ray revisions • NOIRA approved by the Board of Health on April 23, 2010. • Revision to include definition of “misadministration” • 12VAC5-481 RADMAT revisions • During 2011 the radioactive materials portion needs to be amended. • This revision will include removing all references to 10 CFR

  7. Primary Nature of the Requests What are the dangers of radon? What is a source of test kits? What does my test results mean? Can you provide the name of a qualified contractor? Is radon a concern where I live? Is my kid’s school safe? What are the real estate transactions and state radon requirements?

  9. Radioactive Materials Program • Licensing: 559 actions performed • Inspections: 85 performed • Incidents: • 5 in 2009 (1 damaged portable gauge, 1 medical event, 2 lost sources, 1 lost I-125 shipment) • 4 in 2010 (3 portable gauges run over and 1 lost portable gauge)

  10. Radioactive Materials Program (cont) • Scrap yard Alarms: We are regularly responding to scrap facilities where radiation detectors alarm. We have taken possession of military pieces of equipment containing Ra-226. In 2009 the US Navy picked up all and disposed of all pieces we had collected.

Radioactive Materials Program (cont) • Integrated Material Inspection Program (IMPEP) • The NRC regularly inspects the Agreement State programs to ensure compatibility and program status • Virginia’s IMPEP is scheduled for October, 2010. • The NRC performed an orientation meeting on January 20, 2010.
