    15. UTPA Enrollment UTPA was the only game in town in the Valley for years. As a matter of fact, UTPA started UT Brownsville, which became a stand-alone campus in 1989 as part of the merger with the UT System. In 1993 South Texas College was opened. Our former President Miguel Nevárez had a lot do to with starting the college, since he new UTPA could never reach its full potential as an open door institution. As you can see our enrollment dipped – as expected – for about 6 years and then recovered. We have been flat with an enrollment of about 17,000 for the last 4 years. We have the 10th largest enrollment in Texas. UTPA was the only game in town in the Valley for years.
