  3. Hera’s Life • Born of Cronos and Rhea • Swallowed by father at birth • Married brother, Zeus • most jealous and quarrelsome goddess • Punished Zeus’s mistresses/children

  4. Hera’s Life • Punished Zeus- bound up in rawhide thongs • Promised to never do it again • Had 3 children with Zeus • Ares- god of war • Hephaestus- smith-god • Eris- goddess of discord • All were in Pantheon

Hera’s Wrath • Io, lover of Zeus,- drove out to Egypt • Aiakos, a son of Zeus, poisoned island’s water- cleared country • Turned queen Gerana into a crane- claiming more beauty • Hercules, son of Zeus, serpents were sent as a kid, never got killed • Hera drove Zeus’ son Herakles mad, compelling him to murder his own children • Semele had an affair with Zeus and Hera told her something =consumed by Zeus’s fiery lightning
