Determine your needs, interests, and preferences

Determine your needs, interests, and preferences • What NEEDS will determine where you work in the future? • What activities or hobbies interest you? • What are you good at? • What are you not good at? • Do you have preferences involving your future working conditions? • What is going to make you a good employee?

Identify jobs that match your needs, interests, and preferences • The characteristics of who you are now can help you narrow down your job search • Example: If you are on the gymnastics team at LHS, you may be interested in helping coach toddler gym at LGA • Talents and interests you have now could lead to jobs in the future • Your preferences will dictate the working conditions you are willing to tolerate and will impact your success

  7. 3. Update your resume, references, and/or application cheat sheet • Information should be current • Use active verbs and powerful descriptions • Use a style that showcases your particular strengths (Employment, Skills, Education) • Clean, Simple Format with NO grammar or spelling mistakes

  8. 4. Locate Job Openings • Read your local newspapers (Hardcopy and Online) • Large employment websites like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com • Talk to friends, family, neighbors, teachers, anyone with a pulse • Check specific company’s website • Check w/ an employment agency or career center

  9. 5. Complete necessary application material • Application • Cover Letter and/or Resume • References • Salary Requirements • Portfolio

Prepare and go to an interview • Before the Interview • Research company • Practice interview questions • List of questions you need answered • Day of the interview • Personal grooming • Choose your clothing strategically • Look in the mirror • During the interview • Handshake • Body Language • Enthusiasm • Speak Clearly • Sell your skills • Ask Questions

  11. 7. Follow up calls and thank you letters • Send a Thank You letter the next day • Send a Thank You even if you decide not to take the job • Include ideas or points from the interview • Call your interviewer to check back on his/her decision
