Mission of ARC Accessibility Resource Center recognizes individuals with disabilities as one aspect of a diverse community and is committed to the provision of comprehensive resources to the University community (faculty, staff, and student) in order to create equitable, inclusive, and practical environments.

  4. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act was the first disability civil rights law to be enacted in the United States. It prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal financial assistance, and set the stage for enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Section 504 works together with the ADA and IDEA to protect children and adults with disabilities from exclusion, and unequal treatment in schools, jobs and the community.

Americans with Disabilities Act • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is the civil rights guarantee for persons with disabilities in the United States. • In its current form, the bill was amended and signed into law on September 25, 2008 known now as “ADA Amendments Act of 2008”. • Expands the protections of the original ADA to include more individuals with less severe impairments. • Revisions to the definition of “disability” to more broadly encompass impairments that substantially limit a major life activity. • Clarify coverage of impairments that are episodic or in remission that substantially limit a major life activity when active.

How To Establish Eligibility • Submit documentation of a disability to verify eligibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Amendment Act of 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. • Request for services must be initiated by the student • The student must schedule an intake appointment with Accessibility Resource Center

  9. Academic Accommodations • Extended time on exams • Alternative furniture • Conversion of textbooks • Sign Language Interpreters • Notetaking

Notetaking • Professor makes a general announcement to the class without disclosing student’s name • Student enrolled in course wishing to assist with notes comes to ARC to complete the paperwork • Student note taker provides notes to ARC after each class • Notes uploaded and available 24/7 through eReserves • Student note taker paid $75.00 stipend at the end of the semester

Lottery Scholarship • Bridge to Success • Must complete a minimum of 15 new credit hours for the first semester • Must earn a GPA of 2.5 • Legislative Lottery • Must earn 15 new credit hours each semester • Must maintain cumulative GPA of 2.5 • Waivers for Students with Disabilities • Must complete a minimum of 6 credit hours • Maintain a 2.5 GPA • Waiver must be certified by ARC each semester
