  2. World War One changed the map of the world. • The Middle East was split in two. Half was controlled by France and half by England. England’s half was called the British Mandate. (1917-1947) • Chaim Weizmann was a brilliant chemist whose invention of artificial acetone for smokeless gunpowder helped the British during the war. • On November 2, 1917, Lord Arthur James Balfour, a leader in the British government, wanted to thank Chaim Weizmann for his help. He wrote a letter stating that the British government “. . . looks with favor upon the establishment of a national homeland for the Jewish people”. • Though Britain established the countries of Iraq and Jordan for the Arabs, they refused to honor their pledge to establish a country for the Jewish people.

Meanwhile the Jews, not knowing that the British would go back on their pledge, kept immigrating to the land. • The Arabs began rioting and killing Jews to protest the idea of a Jewish state. • The British created the “White Paper” which limited Jewish immigration to Palestine. This prevented the Jews from escaping the Nazis in Europe during World War II. • Many desperate Jews attempted to illegally slip into Palestine.

Meanwhile the Zionists formed the Haganah, a military force to protect the Jews of Palestine from the Arab’s attacks. • Even when the full scope of the holocaust was known and thousands of survivors were stranded in displaced person camps, the British refused to allow them entrance. • In 1947 the royal navy intercepted the Jewish refuge ship Exodus, and sent the passengers back to Germany.

  5. On November 29, 1947, the UN passed a resolution in favor of the partition of Palestine into two states. 33 nations voted for the plan, 13 nations were against it and 11 nations didn’t vote. The majority of the land was Arab, but the Jews accepted the plan and now they had a homeland. • The British gave the mandate to the UN, which decided to end it and divide the remaining land between the Arabs and the Jews. • The next day Arab riots began. Five Arab countries attacked and the British didn’t help • This was the War of Independence. The Israelis held out against ferocious attacks. After months of fighting and thousand of casualties on both sides, a truce was declared and the Israelis won. ISREAL WAS BORN! • May 14, 1948 was to be the last day of the British Mandate. At 4:00 pm the British lowered their flag and immediately the Jews raised their own. • Thus, on May 14, 1948 at 4:00 pm Hay Iyar, Israel declared itself a state. After 2000 years the land of Israel was once more in the hands of the Jews. • David Ben Gurion read the Declaration of Independence over the radio.

  6. The Balfour Declaration The Balfour Declaration was a gift to the chemist ChaimWeizmann, (for his home land), for providing the knowledge of making explosives for the British, in World War One. Arthur James Balfour sent a letter confirming that “His Majesty's Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”.

THE WHITE PAPER • The Arabs protested the immigration of Jews into Palestine and the British did not stick to their promise. • During the 5thAliyah, when many Jews were escaping the Nazis and the lands of the Holocaust,the British issued the “White Paper” deciding to limit the amount of Jews allowed to immigrate to Israel to 75,000 in a period of 5 years. • The White Paper specifically stated that the British would not let Palestine become a Jewish state. • With doors to Palestine closed, hundreds of thousands of Jews were condemned to die in Nazi camps.
