  2. Activity • A simple definition of Activity may be a person being active. Thus, an activity is a various array of multi-faceted events within the daily 24 hour period. • Individual vs. varying numbers • Big vs. small • Ritual vs. learned vs. need

  3. Activity Influences • TIME PERIODS • GENERATIONAL EXPERIENCES • CULTURAL EXPERIENCES • INDIVIDUALITY • ENVIRONMENT • For most there is “No place like Home” to be at one’s highest comfort zone and to be the most relaxed in our involvement with our activities.

  4. Realms of Activities which each of us truly know for ourselves, family and friends: • Family Time • Civic Participation • Spiritual • Academics and Learning

  5. FAMILY TIME

  6. Meal Time • Times • How food is served • Prayer vs. no prayer • Topics of discussion • Who is seated where

  7. Watching Television/Listening to Radio • What type of shows are “Time and Generational” appropriate • Channels with appropriate “Time and generational” material • Movies • Participating in game shows • Listening to “old time” radio shows • Satellite Radio

  8. Playing Games • Cards • Dominos • Board games • Wii “Bowling” • Video games

  9. Talking • Living Room chats • Front Porch • Discussing daily events, personal feelings, and planning for the tomorrow • Entertaining Family and Friends

  10. Shopping • Garage Sales/Estate Sales • Auctions • Shopping sprees in town • EBay • Craft Fairs

  11. The Great Outdoors • Cane pole fishing by the pond or lake side • Making homemade ice cream with the crank freezer on the porch • Front Porch Rockers So many good memories of good times to relive, share with other’s, while creating new ones…at Home…via our enhanced activities.

Chamber of Commerce Community Development Association Political organizations Attend political rallies Voting Active in Veteran Affairs Ladies Red Hat Society Jury Duty (if called to do so) Welcome Wagon Member (for the neighborhood or the facility) Being a part of our community in active ways often enhances our lives. Following are a few examples of how residents enjoy civil participation by volunteering or participating.

  14. SPIRITUAL

  15. In our HOME we may follow and practice and learn more of and share with others our spiritual and religious beliefs. In our local Church we may be active attending and/or teaching. Active in Church affairs and funtions in serving our community. We may be part of planning and organization of our Church’s contributions and goals. In our home we may feel most comforted by our beliefs and practices of spirtual activities. IN OUR HOME

  16. Spiritual Activities • Provide transportation to church/church functions in the community • Residents holding bible studies/prayer groups • Inviting volunteers to hold services at facility • Gospel entertainment • Incorporating tradition in our holiday celebrations

  17. Academics and Learning

  18. Academic Learning • Many find true pride and feel personal accomplishments by the recognitions of our learning experiences. In life, times and situations may influence our abilities to complete a task. In our later years may we continue to actively learn and may we be able to continue to achieve some personal goals.

  19. Things to Consider • Are G.E.D.’s available to those who want to actively learn and earn such a level of recognition. • Might area Independent School Districts or Institutes of Higher Level include “credits” for life experiences in some areas to award Honorary Degrees of Certifications. Some may have actually earned such recognition by their past and current activities. • Teaching and training of computer technology, cell phone use, cooking, gardening, and a zillion other topic areas may be a part of our community • With many who are interested in actively learning or teaching and may feel embellished by a Certificate of Completion.

  20. IN CONCLUSION • There are countless ways to Enhance activity programs in the Facility Setting. • Use Open Minds and Open Hearts to achieve a true Home Setting. Recall memories of your various experiences in life with older relatives, friends, “mentors” as well as with younger people…what created good memories for them and you in their “homes” and communities. Memories are only of past times…enjoy the good ones, learn from the bad ones to create many more good ones. • Get Buy-In from staff/team and provide training on the philosophies that are important in your home. • Allow everyone to live life to THEIR fullest potential.
