Interesting facts • Mobile has an interesting history! • Spanish explorers first arrived in Mobile in the 1500s. • The first permanent European settlement was at Fort Louis de la Mobile in 1702, whichisjustnorth of Mobile atTwenty-seven mile bluff • In 1720 settlersmoved to Mobile’spresent site to Ft. Conde.

  4. Go to the beach/Visit Mobile Bay Gulf Shores Fairhope • Gulf Shores, AL is the home of sandy, white beaches. Gulf Shores is about 50 miles from Mobile. It is just a short drive away! • You can also go hang out on Mobile Bay. Fairhope, AL has a nice pier and is a great place to see the water. Fairhope is only 20 miles from downtown Mobile.

  5. Celebrate Mardi Gras • Did you know that the first Mardi Gras held in the United States was in Mobile? The first Mardi Gras celebration took place one year after Mobile was founded in 1703. • “Mardi Gras” means “Fat Tuesday” in French. • Mardi Gras is a celebration that lasts from Twelfth Night (the 12th of January) to Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday or 46 days before Easter). • Mardi Gras celebrations include lively parades filled with floats, horses, throws, and tons of music!

Go to an Art Museum • The Exploreum is a fantastic museum in downtown Mobile! • You can see one of their traveling exhibits (like Dinosaurs Alive!) • You can also explore one of their permanent exhibits: Body Alive, the Hands On Hall, the Ciba Lab, or the Wharf of Wonder. http://www.exploreum.com/

Go To an Art Museum • You can also go to the Museum of Mobile which is located in downtown Mobile. • They have interesting traveling exhibits (like George Washington Carver). • While there you can also tour their permanent exhibits and learn all about Mobile’s history. http://www.museumofmobile.com/

  8. Tour Ft. Conde • Ft. Conde is a historic fort that protected Mobile for nearly 100 years (from 1723-1820). • You can learn all about Mobile’s history while touring Ft. Conde, and even see how the soldiers lived long ago!

  9. Visit the Phoenix Fire Museum • The Phoenix Fire Museum is in the restored home of the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company No. 6. • This building houses turn-of-the-century horse-drawn steam engines and early motorized vehicles. The gallery on the Second Floor recounts the history of the volunteer fire companies of Mobile from the 1800s.

  11. Fresh Seafood • Mobile is close to Mobile Bay and close to the Gulf of Mexico; therefore, it is easy to get fresh fish, shrimp, and oysters. YUM! YUM!

The Weather is Wonderful • Mobile, AL climate is hot during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 80's and cool during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 50's. • The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 91.20 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 39.50 degrees Fahrenheit.

  13. It is a beautiful city • There are moss covered oak trees all around the city. • Magnolia trees azaleas are in bloom (along with many other beautiful flowers) in Spring and Summer. • The old houses in Mobile give our city a unique charm.
