  1. Flat Stanley visits France and Italy Winter Break 2009-2010

  2. When Flat Stanley arrived in Paris, France, he was tired from his long, overnight flight. Still, he walked to the Eiffel Tower for his first photo.

  3. Flat Stanley used the subway, called the Metro, to get around Paris. Here he is at the Pigale Metro stop in the arrondissement (section) of Paris called Montmartre.

  4. After a few days in Paris, Stanley visited the Loire Valley in France where there are many beautiful chateaux, or castles. Here he is at Chambord, where French royalty went to hunt before the French Revolution. It is surrounded by forest. This is also where famous and valuable art, like the Mona Lisa and Winged Victory, were hidden from the Nazis during World War II.

  5. Winged Victory and the Mona Lisa are now kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum, which used to be a royal palace.

  6. While in the Loire Valley, Stanley also visited Chenonceau, another lovelychateau. It is built over the Loire River. The part over the river is a long gallery with bedrooms above. The section on the right of the picture houses the kitchen, including a stone bread oven built into the wall. Chenonceaualso has beautiful, walled gardens.

  7. After visiting France, Stanley went to Italy. He visited Florence and saw the beautiful cathedral, called Il Duomo, and Michaelangelo’sDavid, which is 17 feet tall and was all carved out of one piece of stone.

  8. Il Duomo at night, seen from a hotel rooftop. It took Michalangelo 3 years to carve David.

  9. Stanley’s final stop was in Pisa, Italy, where he posed near the cathedral and Leaning Tower.
