  2. Early History 300 AD- 710 AD Yamato Period is named after the Yamato province. During this time period the Yamato government took hold of Western Japan.

  3. Kofun Period 250 AD- 538 AD During this time the Japanese continued using Chinese cultures Kofun is Japanese for burial mounds. These burial mounds were built for people of the ruling class during the third to seventh century. Later in the Kofun period these tombs were being built for commoners as well. During this time a lot of immigrants from Korea and China were coming to Japan this created much of the current Japanese culture.

  4. Asuka Period 538 AD -510 AD It was during this time that Buddhism was introduced causing Japanese government to change a lot. The arts in the Asuka period were very similar to Chinese and Korean art. The Asuka period is known for their change in Politica, social, and artistic standing. Very different from the Kofun perio

  5. Buddhism in Yamato Buddhism was introduced to the Yamato court in 552 by the Koreans. It was slowly accepted but eventually became the religion of the Yamato The kofun tomb tradition was eventually stopped as Buddhist traditions came in. The imperial family fell out of power because of the new Buddhist beliefs.

  6. Yamato Economy The economy depended of rice growing at this time. Many of the taxes were paid with rice by the peasants. Beginning with the seventh century, Chinese coins were used to administrate trade. The Japanese attempted making their own coins but it didn’t work out because of the rulers taking advantage of the coinage.

  7. Yamato Culture The Yamato people were known as purebreds. They treated anyone who wasn’t a “purebred” badly and they were discriminated against. They had a lot of respect for their rulers. Bowing was a very important thing when in the presence of a ruler.
