  2. Epidemiology Brooklyn Community District 1 consists of the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint and urgent healthcare needs are serviced by Woodhull Medical Center

  3. Epidemiology Con’t Survey performed on Brooklyn Community District 1 revealed that this community ranked third among 39 districts in having a high rate of asthma.

  4. Map of Brooklyn Community 1 Purple represents areas of land use occupied by Industrial/ Manufacturing Green represents greenspace

  5. Community Design The design of a community is crucial in supporting wellness among its residents, and should reflect a blend of accessible transportation, healthy food, safe housing, and public spaces that promote health Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012

  6. Community Design con’t Air pollution can promote airway inflammation posing significant health risks for children with chronic respiratory problems Renzetti, et al., 2009

  7. Healthy People 2020 A nationwide initiative that works collaboratively amongst one another for the achievement of overall wellness by providing knowledge to clientele to make informed decisions regarding their health US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012

  9. Our Goal for the Community Breath Right Center

  10. Goals Con’t • Clinics that provide a multitude of services for better compliance of wellness practices. • Employment of community health workers who had strong ties, spoke the same languages as the residents, and were familiar with obstacles faced by local families

  11. Breath Right Center The center will also employ nurses and nurse practitioners to implement teaching and medication management, a social worker to address issues and/ or concerns the clients may have that can attribute to exacerbations, and a masseuse to enhance relaxation amongst clients.

  12. Breath Right Services • Incorporation of other programs, such as smoking cessation, will also be available to clients at this center

  13. The center itself will incorporate colors that contribute to peaceful surroundings, providing a welcoming atmosphere to promote continuity of care amongst the clients.
