Did you know . . . ? • In 2005, there were 7,588 preterm • births in Minnesota alone. • The rate of premature birth increased • almost 35 percent between 1981 and 2005. • The March of Dimes reported that one hospital stay for a premature/low birth weight child cost an estimate of $77,000, which is significantly higher than an uncomplicated newborn stay costs of $1,700. Keeping in mind . . . • Prematurity is the number 1 killer of newborns. • The rate of premature birth have increased almost 35 percent between 1981 and 2005. • Doctors do not know why women have premature babies. • There are research trying to find out why they do. • The survival rate of premature babies are higher due to advance medical technologies.
