  2. 説明 Explanation • Relative clauses are clauses which are related to the noun they are modifying; • Relative clauses give additional information about the topic; • Relative clauses can be left out of a sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence; • In English relative clauses are identified by ~that, ~which, ~who (e.g. the girl who is wearing the yellow raincoat) • In the topsyturvy Japanese sentence structure, relative clauses precede the main topic.

  4. Exercise: Turn the following short sentences into relative clauses. The noun you need to modify is underlined • 去年家を買いました。 去年買った家 • 明日(あした)映画を見ます。 明日見る映画 • たけし君(くん)はいつもバスに遅(おく)れます。 いつもバスに遅れるたけし君 • 昨日(きのう)宿題(しゅくだい)をしませんでした。 昨日しなかった宿題
