  2. Due Process • The 5th &14th amendment states people cannot be deprived of “life, liberty, or property without due process of law” • The government must act fairly and comply with established rules

  3. Important Amendments….

  4. 14th Amendment • Approved 1868, the courts extended the protections of the Bill of Rights against the states • The Rights of Citizens: guaranteed due process for all citizens (all people born in the US) • Denied states the power to enforce laws that deprive citizens “equal protection of the laws”

  5. 13th Amendment • Added 1865, ending over 200 yrs of slavery • “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude…shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction” • Before states could decide whether they allowed slavery now the National Govt would not allow it to any state. • Congress now has the power to enforce the law

  6. 15th Amendment • Ratified in 1870 • Prohibits any government in the US from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that the citizen’s “Race, color, or previous condition of servitude” • Congress now has the power to enforce the law

  7. 19th Amendment • Ratified in 1920 • Prohibits any government in the US from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that the citizen’s sex • Congress now hasthe power to enforce the law

  8. 26thAmendment • Passed in 1971 • Standardized the voting age to 18. It was adopted in response to student activism against the Vietnam War
