  1. Utopia and Dystopia Artwork Victoria Dalton

  2. UtopiaHawaiian Tropical BeachBy: Donald K. Hall

  3. How does the work relate to the idea of an utopian existence, place or society? • “Hawaiian Tropical Beach” is very peaceful and serene. It looks like a beautiful day. Imagine going on a vacation to this place. You’d be in paradise. It’d be like Heaven on Earth.

  4. How might the time period in which the work was created affect the utopian vision it portrays? • The time period that this picture portrays makes the artwork appear very bright, sunny, and colorful. It seems like it was painted in the summer time. It shows the desire for summer fun at the beach.

  5. What is the tone or mood of the work? How do the style and colors affect you? • The mood of this piece is quite happy and joyful. Because of the noticeably bright colors, it makes you happy. The picture isn't dull, or boring. I feel like this is the type of picture you could look at and just feel at peace with yourself and everything else.

  6. What do you think was the artist’s purpose in making this piece? What additional information might you need to answer this question? • I think that the artists purpose was to make the person who sees the picture pleased. I think he wanted the person to be full of felicity after they looked at it.

  7. Why might an artist want to portray an idealized setting? • An artist would want to portray an ideal setting to share an experience of his. He probably thought that the beach was a utopia and he wanted others to think the same way. He probably wanted to make the person feel the same way he did when he made this picture. It seems like he’s portraying the happiness that he has into the art piece.

  8. DystopiaDestruction in a Berlin Street

  9. How does the work relate to the idea of a dystopian existence, place or society? • In “Destruction in a Berlin Street” there’s rubble, stone and cement everywhere. No one is in sight of this area. It looks very unpleasant and sad. In a utopia, everything is perfect and people are happy with their lives. When you look at this picture, you’d think that people aren’t very pleased with what is going on in their lives.

  10. How might the time period in which the work was created affect the utopian vision it portrays? • During this time period, World War ll was going on. There was many bombings and destruction. Berlin was being destroyed. The time period that this picture portrays was during a time where people lived in a dystopia. They weren’t happy with what was going on in their lives.

  11. What is the tone or mood of the work? How do the style and colors affect you? • The mood is definitely depressing. It looks like a lot of chaos happened and a lot of people could have been harmed from this. Since the picture is in black and white I obviously don’t find it as carefree and pleasant as “Hawaiian Tropical Beach.” This picture makes me think.

  12. What do you think was the artist’s purpose in making this piece? What additional information might you need to answer this question? • I think the artist knew a lot about the problems in Berlin. Maybe one of his family members lived through this experience. I think he wanted to show the experience and the feelings he had about it through this picture.

  13. Why might an artist want to portray a chaotic or grotesque setting? • I think an artist would want to portray a chaotic setting to show how it was a very emotional occurrence. Everything's torn down. There's not a soul in sight. It shows a very sad and depressing side to the photographer.

  14. THE END.
