Responding to the artpg. 486-487lit book THINK WRITE PAIR SHARE • Study the picture on pg. 486-487 of your lit book • Answer the following questions in your journal • In what ways are poets like birds? • What do you think the poet-birds are talking about? • How do you think the poet feels about poetry? Use details from the painting to support your opinion. • Express your thoughts about the picture and create your own “poem” about birds

Journalresponse “A Narrow Fellow in the Grass” ~Emily Dickinson Pg. 490 • Read Dickinson’s “A Narrow Fellow in the Grass”, after viewingthe YouTube and record in your journal your thoughts, questions, words or phrases you like or may not understand. • Share these thoughts and questions with your shoulder partner • Read the poem again and respond to the following questions in your journal: • How did watching and listening to the video help you in understanding the poem? • Rearrange 1.4 (stanza 1, line 4) into standard subject/verb word order. What do you think 1.4 means? • What two things are compared by the author? • How does this comparison help the reader imagine the “narrow fellow’s” movement? • The speaker describes his reaction to a snake as “zero at the bone.” What do you think he means? • Share with your partner your answers and thoughts after reading the poem a second time ***Listen and view the YouTube version of Dickinson’s poem and then do the following activity.***

Sometimes a Man Stands Up ~Rainer Maria Rilke Sometimes a man stands up during supperand walks outdoors, and keeps on walking,because of a church that stands somewhere in the East. And his children say blessings on him as if he were dead. And another man, who remains inside his own house,dies there, inside the dishes and in the glasses,so that his children have to go far out into the worldtoward that same church, which he forgot.
