  1. Philosophy Question of the Day!!! • An Islamic extremist is asked to describe the events that took place on September 11th, 2001. Describe, in the Islamic extremists own words what he/she saw.

  2. A New Yorker whose husband is a fire fighter in Manhattan, NY is asked to describe the events that took place on September 11th, 2001. Describe, in her words, what she saw.

  3. Do women and men see different things? Do they interpret situations differently because of their sex? • Do teenagers see things differently than adults? Why? • Come up with 3 examples where people see vastly different things when viewing the same thing.

  4. Is what we see really what is happening or is it all blurred by our past experiences? • Why don’t we all reason the same way? We are all taught to act right, be courteous, obey the laws, etc… Why do some choose not to follow these guidelines/rules?

  5. What part do our senses (Empiricist) and our reasoning (Rationalist) play in our decision making? • How do you rationalize drinking under age or doing drugs?

  7. Kant (1724 - 1804) • Born to religious Lutheran middle-class parents in Prussia (Germany) • Maintained respect for religion, but as he grew older he abandoned the fundamental approach of his family • Man of habit; famous for his routines

  8. Kant felt impressions come from experience (empiricism), but that the mind actively makes sense of the impressions to create meaning (rationalism) • Reality is a combination of the outer world and our minds • This is known as Kant’s Synthesis

  9. Kant's Synthesis • He felt the external world gave us the raw material that our minds worked on to produce meaning & reality • Kant felt that the forms of our mind were a priori (not from experience or learned through experience, but exist in our minds before the experience)
