  1. Frequency Issues Breakout Session • Is there anything about the Broadband initiative and its impacts that you would like me to explain in more detail? • Summary of changes resulting from broadband initiative • Current GOES products & services: No change • Current polar products: No change until/if sharing initiated • GOES-R: GRB, EMWIN/HRPT not affected – frequency may change • JPSS: HRD not affected; LRD may be affected • HRPT-like broadcasts likely to continue well into 2020s (MetOp-C) • Timing of auction unknown • Purchase of spectrum by broadband industry and ultimate use uncertain • We must proceed as if sharing will happen within 5 years in the U.S.

  2. Frequency Issues Breakout Session • Is there anything about the Broadband initiative and its impacts that you would like me to explain in more detail? • Short overview of NOAA radiosonde operations & effects upon interference in L-Band • Questions & discussion topics for polar HRPT users • Do you experience interference today? If so, how bad is it? Is it predictable? Do you know what causes it? Have you reported your interference to NOAA? • If you are located outside a future exclusion zone, what impacts to your operations do you predict? • What aspects of your operation will be affected? How? Impacts? • Is there anything we can do to minimize the probability of interference? Shielding? Location of antennas? Beam characteristics?

  3. Fast-track Shared Spectrum Band Recommended For Fast-Track Sharing Current GOES & Polar Current  end of life GOES-15: mid-2020 Polar: 2022 (MetOp-C) Present-Day 6-10 year overlap period when legacy & new are operating 15 MHz Shared Future GOES-R & JPSS Era: 2016+ “Sharing” will be implemented with goal of preventing harmful interference between government & commercial sectors
