  2. For over 600 years, this city, in the middle of the Jordanian desert, was legendary like the Atlantis and Troy

  3. The Swiss explorers who found it had to travel through impressive paths like this, among mountains of rocks.

  4. Imagine the emotions when they first saw this scene in the 19th century!

  5. The Palace of Petra, a temple in Greek style (Hellenic), 42m high, is also called "The Treasure“.

  6. It was Completely carved in calcareous rock.

  7. The palace is only one of many magnificent structures in Petra.

  8. Petra was constructed around 6th century BC, by the Nabatéos, during the Persian Empire.

  9. The Nabateos were Bedouins that lived on the commerce of spices, like incense, myrrh and aromatic plants. .

  10. By the year 60 AD, Petra was conquered by the Roman Empire.

  11. Through the years, the wind has left its marks, carving the most beautiful forms on the mountains of calcareous rock.

  12. Petra was utilized in the final scene of the acclaimed movies Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

  13. Lots of attentions were paid to the details carved into the interiors..

  14. The colors in the rock are natural.

  15. The colored geological composition of the rock formed natural "paintings" like these

  16. Or these, found on the walls of some mountains.

  17. The nabateos built a sophisticated hydraulic system with tunnels and storage tanks.

  18. This theater, in Greek-Roman style, has capacity of 4.000 spectators.

  19. In the year 551, a second great earthquake destroyed almost all the city, and Petra was then never inhabited again.
