  2. Earning the Student’s Trust • Can be a difficult process • Might be a little defensive • Important to create a feeling of trust • Assert authority without being condescending • Treat the student as an equal

  3. Assess Abilities and Attitudes • Employ some diagnostic tools • Measure the student’s abilities • Simply engage the student • Try some reading exercises

  4. Take It Slow • Differs from a child • Deal with frustration or preconceived notions • Assess the student’s level of frustration • Adjust your instructions accordingly

  5. Make the Material Applicable • Remind students to use their new knowledge • Encourage students to practice reading • Use examples and illustrations

  6. Teaching Materials • Use a variety of materials • Easy reader and picture books • Scaffolded Reading Workbooks • Flashcards

  7. Address the Individual’s Needs • Pay attention to the student’s retention • Discover what method they respond to best
