    2. The US in the 20’s Election of 1920-Republicans nominated Senator Warren G. Harding of Ohio from a field of 10 candidates-Calvin Coolidge-VP Democrats nominated Governor James M. Cox of Ohio-FDR-VP- The Harding slogan of “Return to Normalcy” along with Wilson’s unpopularity led to a Republican landslide-Harding ran a “Front Porch”campaign like McKinley-Samuel Hopkins Adams,The Incredible Era.

    3. The US in the 20’s Harding Adm. 1921-23-He brought in the famous “Ohio Gang” led by Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty. Other crooks included Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall and Veterans Bureau Chief, Charles Forbes. His best appointments were Herbert Hoover as Secretary of Commerce, Charles Evans Hughes as Secretary of State and William Howard Taft as Chief Justice.

    4. The US in the 20’s Highlights-1. Peace with Germany was declared by a joint resolution of Congress in 1921. 2. Demobilization of the Armed Forces 3. Fordney-McCumber Tariff-rates up from 27% to 38.5% 4. Taxes and debt reduced 5. Vetoed the Veteran’s Bonus Bill 6. Stock market boom began 7. Farmers in a constant depression from WWI to WWII 8. Mysterious death in August, 1923 in CA on his way back from Alaska.

    5. The US in the 20’s Harding Scandals-1. Teapot Dome-Albert B. Fall leased naval oil reserves without bids. Edward Doheny and Harry Sinclair were the two oil men involved. Doheny loaned Fall $100,000 (Fall got 1 year) 2. Daugherty Bribes-The Attorney General took bribes from German companies. Also sold pardons.(2 hung juries) 3. Veteran’s Bureau-Charles Forbes-250 million involved-(2 year sentence)Coolidge clean

    6. The US in the 20’s Election of 1924-”Keep Cool with Coolidge.” Democrats were so divided over the KKK that John W. Davis was nominated on the 103rd ballot. Coolidge beat the Democrats in a landslide without making a single campaign speech. He said, “I don’t recall any candidate ever injuring himself by not talking.” Read Coolidge quotations

    7. The US in the 20’s Coolidge Highlights-1. Secretary of the Treasury, Andrew Mellon, refused to abolish the income tax in 1925. He said people would lose interest in government if it did not spend their money. 2. National Origins Act, 1924-Set quotas based on the 1890 census. 3. 40% decrease in government spending 4. Announced in 1927 he would not run again 5. Stock market boom continues to the end of his Adm.

    8. The US in the 20’s Election of 1928- Hoover vs. Governor Al Smith of NY. Smith was the first Catholic and Hoover became the first Republican to break the “Solid South.” Landslide for Hoover. His administration was a real tragedy. He started out very popular, but by the end of his term he was the object of scorn and ridicule because of the economy.

    9. The 1920’s: Social & Economic 1. Industries-Automobile-construction-electrical-plastics-airplane 2. Stock Market Agricultural-McNary-Haugen Bill would have dealt with the surplus. Vetoed Social-1. Women’s Liberation-vote-hair styles-dress-dating habits 2. Heroes-Babe Ruth, Charles A. Lindbergh, Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, and other sports heroes.

    10. The 1920’s: Social & Economic 3. Religious Fundamentalism- Monkey Trial of 1925-Bryan vs. Darrow-Evolution 4. Medical Advances-Penicillin and Insulin 5. Living patterns influenced by the automobile Conclusion- The 1920’s brought prosperity and some of the greatest changes in one decade in all of US history.
