  13. Reading Skills

  14. Comprehension With his heart racing inside his chest, Jake reached the office. It was unlocked! The phone was on the desk by the window. He knew what to do. All he had to do was phone 999. But would they believe him? And what was that sound – was that the burglars coming towards him? Out of the window Jake could see something – Mr Mack! The caretaker was walking back from the hedge carrying a bag of litter and grumbling to himself. • What does the phrase ‘with his heart racing’ tell you about how Jake felt? • What kind of mood do you think Mr Mack is in? 3. How does the author make the text exciting for the reader?

  15. 16. Writing Process • Planning – organising ideas • Teacher modelled writing – author’s thoughts and choices, reading good examples • Guided Writing – small groups • Providing structure – writing frames, sentence openers, vocabulary • Editing & Redrafting

  17. Writing Targets – Year 3 • Sentences with capitals and full stops. • Use capital letters for proper nouns. • Use a range of punctuation , ? ! () “ “ • Use commas to separate items in a list. • Adjectives and powerful verbs. • Write sentences in the correct tense. • Use time connectives (next, later) • Use conjunctions (if, so, but) to vary sentence length

  18. Spelling and handwriting • Handwriting is explicitly taught • The children have weekly handwriting lessons. • Each week a new spelling rule is learnt e.g. plurals, adding ing and ed, suffixes er, ful and ly

  19. Skills and self assessment Skill: To use speech marks at the beginning and end of speech. • I used speech marks correctly • I used some punctuation • I need to use the correct punctuation • You have used speech marks. • You have used a capital letter You need to use a comma inside the speech marks.

  20. How to help your child at home • Reading 5 times per week with questions about what they have read • Enjoy books with your child • Support with completing reading records • Learning spellings • Finding opportunities to write • Playing games with your child will develop their speaking and listening skills

  21. Questions ?

  22. Mathematics

  23. Mathematics National Curriculum Core Elements Number and Place Value Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division Fractions, Decimals, Percentages Measurement Geometry Statistics (interpreting and analysing data)

  24. Our approach to calculation • understand numbers and the number system • instant recall of basic number facts • mental calculation strategies • written calculation methods • all of the above in order to solve problems and reason mathematically

  25. Progression in addition Visual or concrete aids Number lines 46+27 40+20=60 6+7=13 60+13=73 Partitioning (breaking it up into easier parts)

  26. Your turn! • Solve this addition using partitioning: • 35+24= • 30+20=50 • 5+4=9 • 50+9=59

  27. Expanded column method 46 +27 13 +60 73 1 46 +27 73 Formal column method

  28. Subtraction Children are taught to relate subtraction to their knowledge of addition. Progression of methods is similar. We encourage children to look for quick, accurate methods such as counting the difference between numbers that are close (e.g. 194-189).

  29. The decomposition method 566 - 278 I cannot subtract 8 from 6 so I need to exchange 1 ten for 10 ones. Use of appropriate decomposition language.

  30. Multiplication Multiplication is initially taught as repeated addition. 24x3 20x3=60 4x3=12 60+12=72 Partitioning is used for some larger numbers Children must learn times tables to have a range of known facts to use in other calculations.

  31. x 30 2 20 1 The “grid method” also uses partitioning and is a way of ensuring no part of the calculation is left out when both numbers have more than one digit. 600 40 30 + 2 672 21x32 600 40 30 2 This relies on a good knowledge of place value and times table facts. It gives the children a good understanding of how the numbers are generated in the formal method.

  32. x 30 7 50 4 Your turn! • Solve this multiplication using the grid method: • 37x54 1500 350 120 + 28 1998 1500 350 120 28

  33. Division Children must use their times tables to help them divide. As with other calculations, we start with visual or physical resources, splitting them into groups to divide.

  34. 92 We move on to using partitioning to solve mentally 92 ÷ 4 = (80 ÷ 4) + (12 ÷ 4) = 20 + 3 = 23 4 (20x4) - 80 12 This leads into the expanded written method where children take away chunks of the divisor. (3x4) -12 0 20 + 3 =23

  35. How to help your child at home • Play games that involve numbers or logic • Notice and discuss numbers in real life situations • Allow children to handle money • Discuss the time and how long things take • Count in different steps forwards and back • Use and discuss measurements together • Play times tables games • Complete homework set
