  1. Ephesians 6:16“in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one”

  2. Trials should bring us to God – James 1 • Worship: “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials” James 1:2 • Maturity: “knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect (mature, NIV) and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1.3-4 • Divine perspective: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1.5

  3. Standing in grace & wisdom from above • Romans 5:1-3 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult (or rejoice) in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; ”

  4. Standing in grace & wisdom from above • Romans 5:4-5 “4 and perseverance, proven character (lit. “proof”); and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.“ (“dok-ee-may”) • “proven character” or “proof” – results in hope? • Our hope is legitimate: that God is at work in our lives in trials via the Holy Spirit

  5. God is at work in our lives in trials • Romans 5:4-5 “4 and perseverance, proven character (lit. “proof”); and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.“ (“dok-ee-may”) • Romans 8:28 “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” • Our hope is real, because God is with us & in us in all seasons of life

  6. Standing in grace & wisdom from above • 1 Peter 1:6b-7 “… you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (proof = “dok-ee-may”, same Romans 5.4) • Proverbs 17:3 “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the LORD tests hearts.” (refining pot = “dok-ee-may”) • “refining pot” = “proven”

  7. Standing in grace & wisdom from above • Romans 5:4-5 “and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.“ (“proof” = “dok-ee-may) • Jeremiah 17:9-10 "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? 10 “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.” (“test” = “dok-im-ad'-zo”)

  8. In times of testing, the Spirit is there • 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction …” • Same as Romans 5.4-.5, the Spirit comes to help in seasons of test & trial • His title is “the Comforter” or “Helper” • We tend to loose perspective & bearings in trials • Hence the repeated directive to worship by Peter & James – to help with “emotions”

  9. The Word of God refines us, in faith • Psalm 105:17-20 “He sent a man before them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18 They afflicted his feet with fetters, He himself was laid in irons; 19 Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the LORD tested (lit. refined) him. 20 The king sent and released him, The ruler of peoples, and set him free.“ • God’s word “refined” Joseph like gold • Only God could make it come to pass • God changed Joseph in his imprisonments

  10. All OT examples of tests & trials are for us • 1 Corinthians 10:11-13 “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13 No temptation (or “test”) has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

  11. Nothing strange when in a trial • 1 Peter 4:12-13 “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for yourtesting (pi-ras-mos), as though some strange thing were happening to you” • We should not think trials are “strange” • A life of no trials & “spiritual-coasting” is not Biblical • But, a God who goes through life’s trials with you, refining your character along the way is Biblical

  12. God knows how to keep you in trials • 2 Peter 2:9 “then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation (pi-ras-mos), and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment” • That’s what we see in Hebrews 12 • Hebrews 12:7 “It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons …” • Hebrews 12:22-23 “But you have come to Mount Zion ... the spirits of the righteous made perfect …”

  13. A living hope in trials • Romans 5:4-5 “and perseverance, proven character (lit. “proof”); and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.“ • Jeremiah 17.9-10, a heart God has searched, known, tested & refined through the course of life
