    7. Make Divine Law Hebrews 8:4-6 – He has the right to specify how He wants His church to be built. Elders (Pastors) – shepherds, not administrators – I Tim. 3; I Pet. 5:1-2. Deacons – I Tim. 3. Evangelists – Ephesians 4. Teachers – Ephesians 4. All members filling a role – I Cor. 12.

    12. Remit Sins Who Cannot Remit Sins? Modern day “priests” don’t have the authority to remit or forgive sins. Mary cannot forgive sins. Cannot pray to Buddha, Allah, or anyone else. Not even Jesus’ apostles could forgive sins.

    13. Remit Sins I John 3:4-5 – It was God’s plan for His Son to take away (remit) our sins. Acts 2:38 – Belief, repentance, confession, and baptism bring about remission of sins. Hebrews 10:16-18 – Jesus made the ultimate offering for sin once (cf. Heb. 9:26-28).

    14.

    15. Add To The Church Acts 2:47 – The Lord added to the church those who were being saved. Not by a committee or by church leadership Not by a congregational vote Saved added immediately to the body (church) Added by obedience to His terms – Acts 2:38-47)!

    17. Specify Worship Worship – “reverent honor and homage paid to God…or to any object regarded as sacred; formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage.” --www.dictionary.com

    18. Specify Worship John 4:23-24 – Must be in spirit and in truth. Matthew 15:9 – Must be sincere. Acts 2:42 – Who taught them to “continue steadfastly” in those things?

    19. Specify Worship Assemble together – Heb. 10:25. Singing – Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16. Praying – Acts 2:42. Lord’s Supper – Acts 20:7; I Cor. 11:23-29. Preaching – Acts 20:7.

    22. Attitudes Toward Authority A Matter of HUMILITY – Matt. 5:3. A Matter of RESPECT – Luke 6:46. A Matter of DESIRE – 2 Cor. 5:9. A Matter of LOVE – John 14:23-24.

    23. How Does God Restrict Religious Activities? Direct Command (Expressed Statement) Approved Apostolic Example Necessary Inference (Conclusion) God’s Silence is also authoritative!

    24. Two Schools of Thought When the Bible is silent on a matter: We are at liberty to do what we think is best. We are prohibited from acting…can only do what the Lord has authorized us to do.

    25. God’s Thunderous Silence! 2 John 9 – Abide in Christ’s doctrine. I Cor. 4:6 – Can’t go beyond what is written. I Cor. 2:9-11 – We can’t presume to know something that God has not revealed. I Peter 4:11 – Speak as oracles of God.

    30. How Does God Restrict Religious Activities? Direct Command (Expressed Statement) Approved Apostolic Example Necessary Inference (Conclusion) God’s Silence is also authoritative!

    32. Direct Command An expressed statement by God that carries the authority of a command. Generic (general) Authority – includes any aid or method that is necessary to carry out the command. Specific Authority – excludes aids and methods that are outside the scope of what is specified.

    35. Approved Apostolic Example A practice in the N.T. done under the apostles’ guidance and is binding for Christians of all generations. Lord’s Supper on 1st day of week – Acts 20:7. Church(es) sending wages directly to preachers (Phil. 4:15-16; 2 Cor. 11:8-9). Baptism in water – Acts 8:36-39.

    36. Necessary Inference (Conclusion) The necessary conclusion from what is written. Sing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) – no instrumental accompaniment. Assemble (Heb. 10:25) – a place to assemble is required. Baptism (Rom. 6:4) – a burial; excludes sprinkling & pouring.

    38. How Does God Restrict Religious Activities? Direct Command (Expressed Statement) Approved Apostolic Example Necessary Inference (Conclusion) God’s Silence is also authoritative!

    39. Aids and Additions Some things are authorized when they are simply aids in carrying out the command. They are necessary so that the command can be obeyed. Some things are not authorized because they are additions; i.e., things added to the commands.

    43. Individual & Church Responsibility Individuals make up the church, but it is not true that “whatever the individual can do, the church can do.” Galatians 6:1-10: Context talking about individual, not church action, in helping one another physically & spiritually. James 1:26-27: James writing to scattered, persecuted Christians, not to a local congregation.

    44. Individual & Church Responsibility James 1:26-27 “If anyone thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless. Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”

    45. Two Treasuries Individual Church Method of Raising

    46. Two Treasuries Individual Church OVERSIGHT

    47. Two Treasuries Individual Church USE Contribution Preaching Gospel I Cor. 16:1-2 2 Cor. 11:8 Pay Taxes Relieving Saints Rom. 13:7 Acts 4:32-34 Provide for Family Edify Saints I Tim. 5:16 Eph. 4:11-18 Maintain Good Works Gal. 6:10

    48. Institutionalism Has moved way beyond the issues of the 1950’s and 1960’s: Then: Church support of orphan homes, nursing homes, Herald of Truth, gymnasiums & other institutions/programs that took over the local church’s responsibility in evangelism, benevolence, and edification.

    49. Institutionalism Has moved way beyond the issues of the 1950’s and 1960’s: Now: “Praise Teams” (including non-Christians) “Contemporary” worship services, sometimes including instrumental music. Women taking public part in worship Community churches, etc.

    50. What About Us? We must oppose institutionalism in all of its forms. However, we must also be active! Zealous & active worship Zealous & active edification (teaching) Willingness to help needy saints collectively and needy non-saints individually
