GENERAL • Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted for a wide number of factors: • building materials available • weather conditions • to land prices • ground conditions • specific uses and • aesthetic reasons • Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work.

  6. What are the elements of Building Construction? Refers to the dictionary Building • Something that is built, as for human habitation; a structure. • The act, process, art, or occupation of constructing. • Element - A fundamental, essential, or irreducible constituent of a composite entity. • Elements - The basic assumptions or principles of a subject.

  7. Type of Building • Residential building • constructed for residential occupancy and can accommodate a person (s) to live in. • Non-residential building • used for some purpose other than residential.

  8. Residential building • single family housing (bungalow, terrace house)

  9. Residential building • multiple family housing (apartments, condominiums). Condominium — A type of ownership in real property where all of the owners own the property, common areas and buildings together, with the exception of the interior of the unit to which they have title. Apartment — A room or set of rooms fitted especially with housekeeping facilities and usually leased as a dwelling.

Non-residential building • commercial (bank, shopping mall, office building) • manufacturing/industrial (factory, refinery, mill) • agricultural (barn, greenhouse), • educational building (school, college, library), • government building (police station, post office), • military building (barracks, block house, fort) • religious building (mosque, temple, church).

  11. Commercial building • is a building that is used for commercial use (business purposes). • Example: bank, shopping mall, office building

  12. Manufacturing/industrial building • Manufacturing building is the building for production of goods for use or sale. • using labor and machines, tools, chemical and biological processing. • Example: factory and refinery

  13. Agricultural building • Buildings and structures associated with farming and the agricultural industry. • Example: barn, greenhouse

  14. Educational building • Educational Building a building designed for various activities in a primary, secondary, or higher educational system and often including living areas for students, such as dormitories • Example: school, college, library

  15. Government building • a building that houses a branch of government or government service activities. • Example: police station, post office

  16. Military building • A military building is any structure designed to house functions performed by a military unit • (barracks, block house, fort)

  17. Religious building • For religion activity • Example: mosque, temple, church

COMPONENTS OF A BUILDING • Substructure • lowest support of a structure • Basically a structure that inside the ground level such as foundation, tunnel, cofferdam. • Superstructure • Extended part of the substructure • A structure that stands above the ground level • Example: Form of beam, slab and column • Material: steel structure, wood or reinforce concrete.
