  3. What is asbestos? • Microscopic Spear-Shaped Fibers

  4. What is it in? • Over 3,000 materials can contain asbestos: • Insulation • Ceiling Tile • Flooring Tile • Brake Pads • Shingles • Valve Packing • Coal Tar Coating • Transite Siding

  5. How can it Enter Body? • Inhalation (Breathing) • Ingestion (Swallowing) Can NOT be absorbed through eyes or skin.

  6. Why is it Hazardous? • Fibers get lodged in lungs or stomach. • Body can not break down fibers. • Scar tissue is formed over fibers. • This can lead to serious illness: • Cancer (lung, stomach, colon) ~ 30 Years Later • Mesothelioma ~ 20 Years Later • “Asbestosis” ~ 15 Years Later

  7. What Should You Do? • Thoroughly soak pipe wrap with soap water before removing (never grind/burn). • Place wet sponge over siding before drilling through Transite siding.

  9. What is Silica? • Hard Crystallized Natural Mineral.

  10. What is it in? • Second most abundant mineral on earth!! • Abrasives • Coal Dust • Concrete • Pavement • Paints • Plant Materials • Plastic Fillers • Polishing Compounds • Sands • Slag • Soapstone • Soil

  11. How can it Enter Body? • Inhalation (Breathing) • Ingestion (Swallowing) Can NOT be absorbed through eyes or skin.

  12. Why is it Hazardous? • Crystals get lodged in lungs or stomach. • Body can not break down crystals. • Scar tissue is formed over crystals. • This can lead to serious illness: • Cancer (lung, stomach, colon) ~ 30 Years Later • “Silicosis” ~ 15 Years Later

  13. What should you do? • Apply water when cutting any type of pavement. • If water is not available, wear an N95 dust mask.

  15. What is Benzene? • Chemical Byproduct of Coal & Petroleum.

  16. What is it in? • Adhesives • Asphalts • Gasoline (contaminated soil) • Glues • Kerosene • Hydraulic Fluids • Inks • Lacquer Thinner • Lighter Fluids • Pesticides • Rubber Cement • Vinyl Thinner

  17. How can it Enter Body? • Inhalation (Breathing) • Ingestion (Swallowing) • Absorption (Eyes or Skin) • Mainly Open Wounds

  18. Why is it Hazardous? • Benzene can cause various blood diseases including Anemia and Leukemia.

  19. What should you do? • Look for signs of contaminated soil. • Discoloration • Strong Odor • Sheen on Water

  20. What should you do? • Monitor the atmosphere before entering trench. • Use grounded ventilation if necessary. • Wear respirators if ventilation doesn’t work.
