Meaning & Understanding • Evolved from modernism but oriented towards classical building character creating a relationship between architecture & the public, and in particular, with those concerned with architecture. • It has been developed in 2 directions: A) The first represented by Sterling using simple& traditional forms that refer to Greek architecture and B) The send is represented by Krier borrowing from Spanish architecture while using modern materials (reinforced concrete) & technologies. • The postmodern response to modern ideas consists of recognizing that the past - since it cannot be really vanished, as its destruction results in silence - must be revisited; but with irony, not innocently • The style contradicts many of the modernist ideas combining new ideas with traditional forms: it is not about recognizing the past, rather it is about plurality profiling the style with variety & refreshing it with new blood according to varied cultural favor. Robert Venturi: the style adopted • “Less is boring” contradicting Mies with “less is more” • Prefer the complexity & contrast instead of having simplicity & harmony • In favor of distorted complex elements in the design that are far from being clear and united • The use of rectangles edges • The choice in the design is: this with that instead of this or that.. Robert Venturi: Major Buildings The building much relates to the traditional architecture but • Vanna Venturi House The choice of pyramid form in all elevations with differentiation in the way of replacing windows or openings The design is released of cubism style Contradiction & secrecy are the design characteristics achieving harmony: the back stair is there for no reason. Marrio Botta: The style adopted • The form is forced to a strong similarity • Function follows for no reason the choice of unnecessary elements designed in the form • Strong intention to use ‘this with that’: triangle in the middle of rectangle or a square in the middle of a circle • The building should have control over the surrounding to the extent of being a focus point • A total segregation of the building with that of the surrounding • Paying much attention to the form while less is made to the interior design • Rectangle edges Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 17.06.2008
