  1. Increasing Access to the Property and Inheritance Rights of Women living with and Affected by HIV and AIDS in Ghana Project Regions. Eastern (Agormanya ) Brong-Ahafo (Sunyani & Wenchi) Volta Regions ( Ho)

  2. OBJECTIVES. Objective 1: To provide WLHIV with appropriate information on property and inheritance rights and increase their access to legal aid. Objective 2: To build consensus and support of policy makers and gender advocates ensuring that National Aids policies uphold and promote women’s rights.

  3. Background • This project is a continuation of previous work done by FIDA-Ghana in HIV/AIDS. The project focused on; • Capacity building for WLHIV and paralegals. • Sensitization workshops • Mobilization • Community outreaches • Advocacy with traditional and religious leaders, men, and other service providers.

  4. Achievements 1. 7 WLHIV have been supported to secure their properties. WLHIV are gaining confidence and are reporting property grabbing cases. More WLHIV are reporting right abuse cases, and several of them are becoming community paralegals.

  5. After A Capacity Building Training For WLIHIVs In Ho

  6. 2.Support from traditional rulers. Traditional leaders are in the forefront of the fight against harmful cultural practices that hinder WLHIV property rights.

  7. Advocacy Meeting With Traditional Rulers.

  8. 3. Strengthened collaboration and partnership efforts with service providers. such as DOVVSU, CHRAJ, Legal Aid, and GHS, This is a firm foundation for creating a quick response system to WLHIV property grabbing cases.

  9. Challenges • Volunteerism of some paralegals is waning. Lack of funding is a continuing challenge to the project’s overall reach, paralegal enthusiasm, and optimal efficacy.

  10. 2. Superstition and ancestral beliefs • Superstition and ancestral beliefs discourages WLHIV to seek redress of rights abuse cases including property grabbing.

  11. 3.Bureaucratic court system • long delays in hearing cases. • Corruption among the police, as well as court staff.

  12. Lessons Learnt • It is important to train PLHIVs as community paralegals. They have been extremely effective role models, advocates, and mediators in their communities. • Collaboration with NGOs and CBOs working with PLHIVs has helped in reaching out to a wider audience of WLHIV with appropriate information

  13. Recommendations 1.Economic empowerment for WLHIV, Socioeconomic disparities impinge on WLHIV and their ability to assert their property rights. Future work should be done to investigate these inequalities to help economically empower these women. • Support to children and orphans’ living with HIV is also proposed. This can be done through the provision of a victims support fund to assist in their maintenance.

  14. Recommendations • 3. FIDA – Ghana recommends funds for more Community mobile outreaches and radio programs. The project will have a much greater reach if more advocacy is done using radio as a tool.
