  2. 2014 POSITION PRIOR TO CONFIRMATION • Applications up by +2.4% (excluding Theology and Nursing & Midwifery) • Overall UF, CF and CI choices up by +2.1% (189.0) • NI & EU Applications up by 0.2% UF – up by 2.5 (+0.9%) CF – up by 111.5 (+2.2%) CI – down by 73.0 (-2.7%)

  3. INTAKE TARGETS • Separate quotas for NI & EU, GB and International • Slight decrease in places for NI & EU students • Overall Number Control for Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing & Midwifery and Social Work • Target intake:

  4. 2014 CURRENT POSITION • More decisions made by A-level results day • Current situation less fluid – fewer outstanding replies • Projected NI & EU intake marginally above target • Nursing & Midwifery on target • GB increase of over 7% (approx. 236) • Adjustment – net gain, numbers small • Clearing – higher numbers accepted – mainly accounted for by acceptances from reserve lists for Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing & Midwifery and Social Work • Intake quota adjusted in some areas to reflect demand for courses and academic plans

INTAKE QUALITY (1) • Quality good overall – some flexibility • Demographic position • Additional places in GB universities • Reduction in percentage of top grades awarded • Increase in non A-level applicants • Similar situation at many universities • Parameters used in borderline cases • Alternative offer – 3 A-levels plus 4th AS-level • Changed Course offers • Performance in relevant subjects • Grade combinations  • Similar parameters applied to Leaving Certificate applicants. • NB In a significant number of areas, the flexibility exercised was only possible as a result of an increase in the numbers admitted.

INTAKE QUALITY (3) • Less than one full A-level grade drop • (Mainly 1 AS-level drop) • Business Information Technology • Chemistry (BBC + c if BB in Chemistry and Science) • Biological Sciences (BBC + c if BC in Biology and Chemistry – except Biochemistry) • Accounting • Actuarial Science & Risk Management • Economics • Film Studies • Social Work

INTAKE QUALITY (4) • One A-level grade drop • Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - if BB in Maths and relevant Science • Civil Engineering • Electrical and Electronic Engineering - if B (Maths) BC in 2 relevant Sciences • Mathematics - if A in Mathematics • Physics - if B in Maths and C in Physics • Psychology (BBB only) • Dentistry (1 student – high interview ranking) • Food Quality, Safety and Nutrition • Pharmacy • BA degrees except Film Studies, Drama and Sociology • Law (ABB only)

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS OF CONFIRMATION AND CLEARING • Increase in numbers who did not have qualifications listed on applications • Missing results (eg BTEC/OCR unit grades, Access) • UCAS technical problems (changed course offers) • Call centre • Total calls over 5 days in 2013 – 5767 (1933 answered on A-level results day) • Calls on A-level results day in 2014 – 6299 (2111 answered) • Unrealistic expectations • Are we too open/transparent?
