  1. CAD Considerations for Project Managers An interactive discussion Edward C. Lick IT CAD Support Manager STV, Incorporated Douglassville, PA 19518 610-385-8335

  2. How would you handle this requirement? Trying to plot a set of mylar's from one of his Port Authority projects (and they are very picky about their print jobs). Need the plotter to be set up to be 22"x34" w/1" top, bottom & right border ( 1 1/4" on the left). Can we help him out? Printing from AutoCAD to the 4th floor JDL5000-A plotter. Please contact Boris @ x3458.

  3. CAD Integration into the Project Manual - Estimated Investment, $150k “…Template files and standard processes for Submittals, to be integrated into the evolution of a project especially at the very start.” “…Forethought must be given and time provided to decide which CAD Standard a project will adhere to and template files should be set up.” “…In summary, attempts should be made to ensure that the technology we have on hand is maximized and utilized wherever and whenever we can. An integration check list is simply a start.” STV, Inc. CAD Assessment 2004 By Edward C. Lick

  4. Purpose • Communication • Eliminate Errors • Speed (real, not perceived) • Consistent Quality • Performance • Save Money

  5. Major Categoriesfor CAD Considerations for projects • Start / Input • Production • Output • Finish / Close

  6. The Check List

  7. Start and Input • Communication • CAD Product for Deliverables • Expertise • Due Dates

  8. Communication • IT CAD Support – help us help you! • Meet with a CAD Manager and/or CAD Discipline Leads to discuss the check list • Project Specifications for Design • Directory Structure Requirements - By Clients • CAD Standard Manuals – Distributed • CAD Leads, Discipline Leads Assignments

  9. CAD Product for Deliverables • AutoCAD • Microstation • Verticals? i.e. Revit, InRoads, BRADD • 3D Rendering? • Licensing • Additional Software Requirements by Client

  10. Expertise • AutoCAD • Microstation • Verticals such as Revit, InRoads, BRADD, GIS • 3D Rendering • IT CAD Support help find the experts • Assist with user evaluations

  11. Due Dates • Proposals • Submittals – 30%, 60%, 100% • Plot requirements

  12. Production • Drawing Integrity • REAL WORLD SIZE!!!!!! • Philosophy Change – Its Data, not a drawing! • Geometry Snaps – Endpoints, intersections

  13. Production • Drawing Efficiency • This work is not acceptable – at any level • Geometry Snaps – Endpoints, intersections • Associative Hatch and Dimensions

  14. Standards • IT CAD Support • Assist CAD Leads for setup of… • Naming Conventions • File Names • Layer Names • Sheet • Sheet Borders • Fonts and Hatch Patterns • Symbols and Details (Design Center Files) • Template/Seed Files

  15. Template/Seed Files • Sheet layouts for plotting, North Arrows, Standard Notes, etc. • Text and Dimension Styles • Standards Checking Configuration • Referenced Border with Data Fields • Layers and their Color and Lineweights • Plotting Page Setups – Pen Tables

  16. Production • Document Management • Reference Files • Avoid Replicated Data/Drawings • Collaboration • Image Management

  17. Document Management • Reference Files • Cartoon Set - Preset • Block Diagram/Drawing Tree • Avoid Replicated Data/Drawings • Collaboration • Multiple Offices • Multiple Stakeholders • Buzzsaw • Projectwise • Skire

  18. Image Management • Reduce image size • Referenced Images & CAD files in the same directory • Remove unused Image files

  19. Output • Plot Configuration Files • Plotting • Submittals • Packager and Etransmit Command

  20. Plot Configuration Files • PCFs for Microstation • Color Tables for AutoCAD • Page Setups • Embed in the Template Files

  21. Plotting • Template file “Layouts” can be preset for single-click and consistent plotting • Batch Plotting

  22. Submittals • Schedule Dates – cut-off date for changes - two day buffer margin • What is the required format? • DWF – Publish multi-sheets in a single file • PDF

  23. Packager-Etransmit • Easily creates a compressed version of DGN/DWG files • Includes all referenced files, fonts etc.

  24. Closing the Project • External References • Bind • Purge CAD Files • Purge File Folders • “Junk” • Archive • Project Archive Procedure
