  1. PEE- Medium Assessment Lord of the Flies

  2. Theme Choose a theme that exists in this passage from Lord of the Flies. Possible themes: Loss of innocence, loss of identity, blindness and sight, fear of the unknown, power corrupts and power unites, civilization versus savagery, the dark side of human nature, nature of evil, anarchy, the need for civilization and order.

  3. Characterization • Choose one to two characters from the passage and think about what is being said about the beliefs, values, attitude of the character(s) through the passage. Think too about them as a symbol– and how it strengthens your point. • Make a Point – what do we understand about (Ralph, Jack, Roger, etc) through that this passage (How are they changing or what is their personality) How does this relate to your theme? • Example – provide a quotation to support the point above. • Explain – explain the quotation, discuss any connotations from any of the words in the quote you used, what can we infer or is implied from the quotation and explain what it reveals about the character/personality/beliefs/etc…

  4. Piggy. Point - Piggy loses his sense of what is morally right and wrong when faced with the power he gains through the conch. Example - “’I’ve got the conch!’ said Piggy indignantly.” Explain - The conch a symbol for order, authority and leadership empowers Piggy despite the fact he is not chief or leader of the hunters. He boldly confronts the leader of the hunters and does not realize that in a civilized society one does not question authority. Through the power of the conch he feels that he has a right to speak down to people, “you littluns shut up!” Showing he no longer respects those around him. Piggy the symbol for the adult world, rational thought and intelligence is slipping into the same mentality as the other boys. Piggy feels he is empowered by the conch and therefore thinks he can be cruel and not faces the consequences of treating people in a uncivilized way.

  5. Tone Point: what is the tone of the passage? So, how does William Golding feel about the theme you are writing about? And what does he want us, the reader, to understand, think and feel about this theme? Example: Give one. Explain: Explain the quotations importance and its relationship to your theme. And then why this tone is used.

  6. Tone Point – The tone of the passage is serious and frightening because Piggy questions those with more power than him and therefore questions the rules by which a civilization is defined. Golding wants us to realize that this is serious and frightening because Piggy is one of the only boys who thinks about consequences of actions and survival. However, through his changing attitude we see the downfall of both Piggy and the other boys through not following those in charge. Example: Piggy asks Jack, “which is better – to be a pack of painted Indians like you are or to be sensible like Ralph.” Explain: He continues to criticize those around him, something someone who is unwilling to look at another perspective will do in order to prove themselves right. This tone is created to show that the breakdown of rules in a society is a serious matter and can be extremely frightening.

  7. Mood P: The serious and frightening because Piggy is one of the only boys who thinks about consequences of actions and survival. However, through his changing attitude we see the downfall of both Piggy and the other boys through not following those in charge. E: “Which is better – to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?” E: If Piggy had been able to realize that both are important aspects of survival then he would have been more accepted by the boys. He was a constant reminder of rules and regulations imposed by civilization that had been forgotten when faced with the need to survive. Piggy’s need for power shows us that anyone can succumb to the darkness within and that power in the wrong hands can destroy unity.

  8. Mood Point: Discuss the mood of a character or the mood(s) of a character. What this or these moods reveal about the character. Example: Provide one for one of the moods 1st. Explain: analyze the quotation, what it is showing about the character. Example: Provide the second mood. Explain: analyze the second mood and what it reveals about the changing nature of the character. If you have done two character do the same as above but also explain what is revealed by the difference of mood in characters.
