    11. 19.3.2012 11 Early history In the 1970’s Outokumpu was known as an active mining company with activities mainly in Finland. In late 1970’s Outokumpu started to look for foreign mining projects. The first project was in Ecuador, Minera Toachi S.A.’s La Plata copper-zinc mine. This project was a joint project with Peruvian mining company Buenaventura. However, the project did not come up to economic expectations and the partners decided to withdraw from the project. Don Alberto Benavides, CEO of Buenaventura during that time, convinced Outokumpu to come to Peru.

    12. 19.3.2012 12 In the first years Outokumpu operated through the Finnish Embassy in Lima. The activities were technology sales and prospecting mineral deposits. 1981 Outokumpu established a representative office in Peru, Outokumpu Oy Sucursal Del Peru Close cooperation started with local mining companies Buanaventura, Milpo, Tintaya etc. In mid 1980’s when Peru’s economic and political climate became less favorable for mining companies, Outokumpu decided to freeze prospecting activities and continue with low profile technology sales. In the early 1990 the conditions normalized and Outokumpu enforced the activities. In 1997 Outokumpu established a legal entity and Sucursal’s activities were transferred to Outokumpu Tecnica Peru S.A.C. Representative office in Peru
