  1. Moving Forward: How to best implement these ideas? John Lehmkuhl Research Wildlife Biologist Wenatchee Forestry Sciences Lab

  2. The workshop has attempted to… • Understand the issues & objectives. • Learn from our past and current efforts • Focus our diffuse current individual efforts into a logical and defendable framework. • Answer the question: "If we manage stands, then how to do it for multiple ecological and social benefits?"

  3. We have a lot to work with – we are not data free: • How stands have changed from human activity and the implications • Knowledge of plant and animal response to current treatments • A rich literature on natural history & responses to similar older practices & other areas • Practical experience doing such treatment during the last 10+ years.

  4. What is uncertain? Current science may not be enough… • Gaps in knowledge geographically • Short recent time span for projects, i.e. long-term effects • Local variability • Climate change – what works now may not work well in 20 years • Social values and expectations

  5. Business as usual? • Current decentralized & diffuse grass roots efforts • Allows creativity and adaptability to local situations • Diffuse effort = diffuse knowledge • slow progress • repeating the same mistakes • litigating the same issues

  6. Embrace a new management model? • Management study network • Address the same ecological & litigation issues • Create focused knowledge • Fast progress • Challenges: • design template • monitoring template • coordination • resources, monitoring especially

  7. Mission Creek

  8. Birds & Burns Network with Vicky Saab, RMRS, & others

  9. “Adaptive Management”..... Develop treatments Implement treatments Measure/ Monitor effects Effective? yes Evaluate no Valid assumptions? yes no

  10. Several ways we can approach it: • Management studies templates for local adoption and monitoring: mostly managers implementing preferred actions • Above, with managers implementing alternatives • Above, with coordinated monitoring with research scientists of a few locations

  11. Ideally, most will have elements of reliable design: • replication • controls • alternative prescriptions to address uncertainty and learn fast • monitoring at low to high levels depending on questions and resources.

  12. Organization • ad hoc • PNW Consortium for Fire Science Delivery • Dry Forest Landscape Working Group under the US Fish & Wildlife Service & the NSO Recovery Plan

  13. What we need? • your interest (high based on workshop attendance) • willingness to take risks to try something different • support & incentives from the top • support & incentives from the public (negative already there?) • resources for monitoring

  14. Are you interested in implementing workshop recommendations in your next project?Do you want to participate in a management study network? Questions for you…

  15. Discussion?

  16. “Adaptive Management”..... Analyze trends: was management successful? YES NO Adopt & continue monitoring Design & test new prescriptions Implement& monitor
