  21. Speedball Skills: • Passing, dribbling and catching skills. • Offensive skills and strategies including shooting, passing, dribbling and ball handling. • Defensive skills and strategies, including goalkeeping and person-to-person defense. • Teamwork. • History of Speedball • The game of speedball was developed by E.D. Mitchell at the University of Michigan in the early 1920's because of the need for a vigorous team game that could be played outdoors in the fall and that combined many of the elements found in other rather well-known sports. • Many of the students in the mid-west had been introduced to basketball in public schools and they did not like soccer because of the restrictions regarding the use of hands on the ball. • Touch football, while a popular game, had certain limitations in that many players on the team did not get to handle the ball regularly. • Speedball eliminated many of these objections by providing a game that permitted all the players to participate in all aspects of the game. • The game has developed rapidly and is now a widely played sport in physical education and intramural programs throughout the country.

  22. Speedball • Playing the game: Handball rules apply when ball is in the air and possessed- • Dribbling is aloud • 3 steps • 5 seconds to get rid of ball • Basketball defense Once ball hits the ground: • Soccer rules apply • Ball can only get back to hands by hopping, or kick passing to someone in air • Throw ins for balls out of bounds • Goalie can use hands in shooting zone only • Scoring • In air with hands-before shooting line( goal is entire green mat) • On ground-with shooting soccer style before shooting line(entire green mat) • Drop kicks worth 2 points, soccer and overhand shooting worth 1 point

  23. Disc Golf What is disc golf? • Disc golf is a great sport for everybody that relies on one's ability to throw a disc with power and accuracy. People of any age, ability, and gender can excel and enjoy disc golf immensely. • The object of the game is to walk/play a course from beginning to end in the fewest total number of throws of a golf disc. Similar to the traditional golf game, a course is composed of a number of holes, in which each player begins by throwing from the tee, and completes the hole by landing in or striking the target. • The total score for a course is determined by totaling the number of throws made on each hole. The winner is the player who completes the course in the fewest number of throws...or whoever has the most fun!

  24. Disc golf rules • Class Rules:   • *  Must tee off (throw) from the tee box area and behind the cones. • *  The object is to place the Frisbee inside the hoop in the fewest throws possible. • *  In a group, the person farthest from the target throws first. • *  Keep track of  your throws on the scorecard. • *  Lowest score for the round wins.

  25. Strategies for team sports Basketball- • formations/defensive systems/press, triple threat position, give and gos, pick and rolls, boxing out Softball- • double plays, crow hops, tagging up, backing up throws, windmill pitching Flag football- • running plays, 3 point stance, defensive coverage Soccer- • formations, heading, moving w/out the ball, communicating. Lacrosse- • formations, long sticks defenders Handball-formations, screens, basketball defense Volleyball-bump , set, spike

  26. Modified games for PE class • Small sided games such as 3 v 3 gives more touches on the ball to develop skills Some team sport have specific rules during class. • Softball-no sliding. • Basketball-make it trade it, everything worth 1 pt. • Flag football-no stiff arms • Team handball-closer shooting lines • Soccer-no slide tackling(no shinguards) • Volleyball-larger teams • We try to maximize participation by setting many small games to avoid lines and standing around.

  27. Peer Pressure and Sportsmanship • Positive peer pressure • “Nice try, get it next time” • “Don’t worry about it, we’ll win the next one” • High 5’s, knuckles • Fairness, showing respect to others, good winners, shaking hands after • Negative peer pressure • Name calling • Calling out a bad play • Complaining • Makes excuses, blames others, reacting to a loss in an immature way • Sportsmanship • Be positive-teamwork –self control, courage, persistence, and respect for authority and opponent • Be there for a teammate to help • Be a leader, communicate, work with others • Collaboration, share responsibilities • Respect equipment and facilities
